Children have been getting less and less active for decades now. Modern conveniences, busy parents, and now technology have conspired to create an environment where they can find enough stimulation so that they have little motivation to go outside and do something physical. The lockdowns didn’t help things much at all. Children can spend ten or more hours in front of screens per day now. And with their school on the computer, they have a good reason to feel like their lifestyle is normal and good. But it is not rocket science to understand that there will be a cost to all that inactivity. Children should have at least 60 minutes of activity a day. Here are some suggestions to encourage your children to be more active.
• Programs: Finding healthy activities for our kids is something parents have been concerned about for a long time. So, there have already been many great programs developed to address the issue. If your children have some apparent interests, then it is best to pursue that more specifically. But if you have no idea what sort of thing will catch their attention. You might want to consider enrolling in a more general activity-orientated program, such as the Athletic Buddha’s after school sports programs. Then, with a wide variety of choices and other children’s encouragement, they will have every opportunity to realize how fun being active is.
• Swimming: Virtually any kind of activity is helpful, but few are as universally beneficial as swimming. Not only is swimming a life skill that everyone should have, but it could also save their life one day. Swimming is a total body activity that causes you to exercise almost without being conscious of it. Also, everything about being in a pool is fun. Swimming programs will make the activity a scheduled event. And there is the fun of attaining new levels of accreditation.
• Family Outings: If you have the time, your children will love to do things with you—even active things. Going on a hike is more fun when your parents join in. If it is possible, you could make simple outings a regular event. Maybe a walk every weekend? And you could do some special activities from time to time like going to a rock-climbing facility, or how about camping?
• Activity Rewards: If your children are rewards orientated, and most of them are, you might want to develop a reward system for active behavior during the day. If you are clever, you will include chores like mowing the grass among the list. Perhaps you could trade screen time for outside time. But whatever motivates them is what will work best.
It can beheart-breaking to see the state that children have been allowed to get into. But even children who don’t seem to be suffering from inactivity could be doing a whole lot better if they got their heart rate up a few times a day.
